Founded in the 12th century under the Duke of Brittany, this powerful fortress covered 4 hectares (10 acres) and was flanked with 12 towers. It symbolized the grandeur of the Clisson and Rohan families, and was a centre for the Protestant faith in the 16th and 17th centuries.

The Château de Boumois was built by Baron de Thory in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. It is interesting for the changes in style reflected in its architecture, from the Gothic to the early Renaissance. The two sides of the main building express this double character well. During your visit, you will see the main drawing room and the early 16th century chapel. At the end of your visit, take note of the 17th century dovecote or 'fuye', still in its original condition.
